Running in Pearl City

Do you think running in Palisades (or anywhere in Pearl City) is hard?  The answer is yes due to all the steep hills.  Each degree of slope makes the running 4% harder.  Hills around Pearl City aveage about 2-5 degrees.  That means people who run around Pearl City run 20% harder.  That may not seem like much but 20% is the difference between a jog and a run or a run and a sprint.  When you jog around Pearl City, you are running and when you run, you are sprinting.  Running downhill isn’t accounted for but running downhill isn’t any easier than running on flats so there isn’t really a net gain.

Everyone knows that the steepest hill in Pearl City is in Palisades.  The big hill leading into Palisades has slopes as high as 28 degrees.  The overall slope from top to bottom is 9 degrees.

The hills inside Palisades max out at 9 degrees and the average slope overall is about 4 degrees.

Whenever you run in Pearl City, consider it about 20% longer.

*Notes:

-All slopes are measure in degrees, not percents.

-Numbers were attained from Google Earth and actually going to the hills themselves to measure.

-My equation was: Inverse Sine(Change in Altitude divided by Distance)

Delightful Drudgery by Peter Tanaka

Everyday, dragging self to practice.

Desiring water fountain and rest.

Work required to be the fastest.

Can’t give up in order to pass the test.

Pushing hard when my body says to stop.

Sweat flowing, blood coursing swiftly through veins.

Stopping would be easy, but I don’t walk.

Finally, it’s the finish. I feel no pain.

How can I practice when I don’t want to?

Most kids consider this a punishment.

Will I give up now or will I push through?

Finish in sight, what a distance I went.

Tried to hard and tore myself a muscle.

Trainers tell me I have to take a break.

I will not!  I know but one thing: to hustle.

Pain is not felt in running, only aches.

Everything I worked for comes down to this!

Stomach churning, heart racing, don’t want to fail.

Drink water, tie shoes, stretch well.  Checked my list.

Is this really it? My own holy grail.

Lined up ready to go.  “Bang!” goes the gun.

Like an angry pack of dogs, off we run.
